A 10-YEAR-OLD girl drowned in a pool while attempting to drink water while her six-year-old younger brother watched helplessly.

Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Joram Sithole confirmed the incident which occurred in Inyozani Village 2 in Fort Rixon on Sunday last week around 5 pm.

He said Melisa Ndlovu was driving a herd of cattle home together with her brother when she stopped to drink water at a pool along Inyozani River.

“I can confirm that we received a case of drowning involving a 10-year-old girl Melisa Ndlovu. She left her home to collect cattle from a grazing area together with her younger brother and on her way back she stopped by a pool along Inyozani River which is close to her home to drink some water.

“While drinking water, she fell inside the pool and drowned. Villagers heard her younger brother scream for help and by the time they arrived at the pool she was dead. Police were called to attend the scene,” he said.

Asst Insp Sithole appealed to parents to warn their children against going near water points.
