Girls ace it in debate

THEREaS a school of thought that says girls mature faster than boys, as such they are the more intelligent sex at adolescence.

Still, thereas no conclusive study to this because depending on communities there are different factors but Advanced Level (A-level) results statistics show that girls of late are performing better than boys in the course that takes pupils to tertiary education level.

Statistics gleaned from the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) for the past two years prove that girls came out tops in 2015 and 2016.

Itas no surprise that Zimbabweas representative team at the Southern Africa Debate Time Competitions Finals held at Fairmount Hotel, Livingstone, Zambia last month and dominated by girls, did well.

It was a four-nation tournament that had representatives from Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabweas team comprising three girls and one boy was drawn from Herentals Victoria Falls College. The motion of the debate was;A a?The Government should ban the use of cellphones in schoolsa?.

Reports from Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation say important points were clearly stated by the speakers from Zimbabwe, Blessed Malandu, Jeftar Zulu, Tadiwanashe Dzangayi and Thubelihle Ncube.
T

he debate was broadcast live by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).

Zambia, being the first won $2A000 and a trophy and Zimbabwe walked away with $1A000 and a silver trophy. South Africa and Namibia battled it out for third and fourth position respectively.

Team Zimbabweas patron Michel Moyi said her team was well-prepared for the contest.

a?a?We thoroughly studied for the competition. We took our A game even though we came second we are proud of what we achieved,a? said Moyi.

One of the debaters, Thubelihle Ncube, an Advanced Level arts student said the competition was an eye-opener and God willing she could represent Zimbabwe in more competitions of this magnitude.

a?It was an honour to represent Zimbabwe. I feel like we have been the voice of Zimbabwe and this has set our college on the map but next time we are going to be the champions,a? she said.
