GIRLS High shot to the top of the log in the Girls Schools Rugby League at the weekend after thrashing hapless Mabvuku 52-0 in a one-sided encounter which took place at Vainona High.Girls High are tied on 30 points with nearest rivals Vainona but they have a higher score of 241 compared to the hosts’ 221.

Coach Abraham Rwodzi said all they now need to do is beat the defending champions Vainona in the final match to win the league title.

“My team has been very good this season and all we need to do is beat Vainona to win the league which I believe is very possible. They have won all their fixtures but we have more scores, the girls have been training very hard.

“We train every day from Monday to Friday to ensure that in future we will be the unbeaten side, my forwards and backs are all good and we are planning to continue working on strength and conditioning,” said Rwodzi.

Goromonzi are third on the log standings with 20 points and a score of 65 while Mbare High has 18 points.

Roosevelt will play Royal College while Lord Malvern take on Mbare.

Goromonzi will play Roosevelt and the final of the league will be between Girls High and Vainona on July 5.

Meanwhile, there will be no league matches this coming weekend as teams will be heading to Royal College to take part in the Girls Sevens tournament.

Vainona are not just the defending champions in the league but are also the defending champions in the Sevens tournament. But Rwodzi believes they are going to wrestle the title from Vainona in the sevens.

“We have the stronger side for the Sevens team. All the preparations are going on well and we are ready and looking forward to the game. The team looks good, our line-outs have been good and I see no reason why we should not grab the title from Vainona,” Rwodzi said.
