Give readers value for their money, veteran coach urges sportswriters

VETERAN coach Cosmos Zulu has urged sports reporters to give readers value for money by reporting exact things that would have occurred during a football match forexample.Zulu was speaking during a Nokel Security sponsored Sportswriters Association of Zimbabwe (Southern Region) workshop held in Bulawayo on Saturday afternoon. The workshop was meant to discuss soccer rules’ changes, ethics and other topical issues.

The former Highlanders and AmaZulu mentor said he had been surprised sometimes when reading match reports of a match that he would have attended as the reports portrayed a totally different picture.

“You need to give your readers value for their money by reporting accurately. Let someone who would not have gone to the stadium visualize how the match would have gone. We don’t want to just read about a goal without being told how the goal was engineered,” said Zulu.

He said sports reporters hold a very important portfolio in society as they were the eyes and ears of soccer fans who would not have gone to the stadiums for various reasons.
“The other thing I want to advise you against is going to cover matches while drunk. You are discrediting yourself and the media house you represent. Honestly people will not have faith in what you report if they see you dead drunk while on duty,” said Zulu.

The workshop kicked off with journalists being taken through Law 11 and 12 by retired referee Edson Nkau, now a match assessor. Nkau’s delivery was lively and attracted a lot of questions from the participants who wanted clarity on a number of situational settings during a game.
