GLEN View 3 residents have taken the initiative to set up a neighbourhood watch committee in the suburb due to an increase in robbery cases.
In an interview with H-Metro, Glen View 3 Neighbourhood Watch Committee founder, Panashe Mahiya, said the committee consists of 15 young people.
“The major problem we were facing in the past few months was theft,” he said.
Mahiya said the programme appears to have helped youths to stay out of trouble.
“This is the community’s way of fighting unemployment and drug abuse, among the youths.
“To invest in youths, and promote their social inclusion, the community has set up a project, which seeks to provide employment opportunities, earnings and help improve living standards of urban youths.
“The little they get will go a long way in sustaining them to desist from drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Mahiya said the youths were faced with many challenges, which will affect their future, if not dealt with now.
“They include lack of education, unemployment or informal employment and high rates of poverty and inequality. All of them contribute to crime, violence, drug and substance abuse, which are highly prevalent in ghetto communities,” he said.
Mahiya said there were many returnees from South Africa, who were now into crime.
