Glendale to host 21st Movement Gala

celebrate the life of President Mugabe, who turned 89 years on February 21.
An array of artistes will grace the event set to awaken the usually quiet farming town from its deep slumber.

Director of Urban Communications in the Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity Major Anyway Mutambudzi confirmed the latest development, adding that his department was yet to finalise the list of musicians lined up to perform.

“This year’s 21st Movement celebrations will be held in Glendale and we are still in negotiations with musicians who are supposed to perform at the national event,” he said. The 21st Movement Gala has seen big names in the entertainment industry sharing the stage. The event has become one of the major highlights on the country’s  entertainment calendar.

It remains to be seen if musicians such as Baba naMai Charamba, Suluman Chimbetu and Cde Chinx, who have featured in previous events, will feature again.

However, it appears that Alick Macheso, who has always been one of the major drawcards on this event, may not be around this time, as he has a number of shows lined up in Johannesburg this weekend.

Extrabasso has become a regular feature at national galas and he often conducts high- energy performances on stage as he connects with his fans.

Some of the big names expected to grace the music gala include Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria, Mbare Chimurenga Choir, Jah Prayzah, Peter Moyo, Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima, Tryson Chimbetu, Progress Chipfumo and Sulu.

“Madzibaba”, or simply the “Senior Lecturer” to his adoring fans, has a long list of songs which are expected to delight the fans.

If Kapfupi makes it to the final line-up, he is expected to show up with his wife — Mai Nga. Youths who will attend the gala will be more than happy to see the “Ninja President”  Winky D belting out songs like “Bhachi neJean”, “Figo Figo”, “Summer Time” and “Wakasara”.

Now backed by a live band, Winky D has raised the bar in Zimbabwean dancehall, although his longevity in the game is not guaranteed as there are a host of other upcoming talents like Jiggaz and Spider, who are also expected to feature at the gala.

It is hoped that the 21st February Movement celebrations will live up to their  billing as one of the fast emerging entertainment arenas for both upcoming and talented musicians.
