Global demand for Zifa post

Sikhumbuzo Moyo, Senior Sports Reporter
ZIFA says it has received about 15 applications for the vacant general secretary’s post, with one application coming from France and others from Swaziland and South Africa.

The national association called for applications to replace Jonathan Mashingaidze, whose contract expired on April 1. Zifa had set September 30 as the closing date for submission of applications, but has now pushed back the due date to October 15. Zifa chief operations officer Joseph Mamutse has been acting general secretary.

“I have received a number of applications from across the globe, but the exact numbers will be known on Saturday,” said Zifa vice-president Omega Sibanda, who is responsible for the administration side of the association.

Inside sources said five applicants are from Bulawayo, with educationist Elkanah Dube being among the first to submit his papers.

Administrator Nkululeko Ndlovu and former Mamelodi Sundowns top employee Kenneth Makhanya also threw their names into the hat for consideration.

Sibanda could not be drawn into divulging the name of the France-based applicant, but confirmed that applications had come from Europe.

In an advertisement flighted last month, Zifa indicated that it was looking for a person in possession of a commercial degree or relevant sports management degree, while an MBA would be an added advantage.

The duties of the general secretary include implementing decisions passed by the Zifa congress and the executive committee, organising meetings for the congress, executive committee, standing committees and secretarial services. The person is also expected to lead budget formulation and control.
