ZIMBABWE Cricket Bulawayo Big Match organisation has embarked on an initiative of working with socialites and media influencers in order to promote international cricket in Bulawayo.

With a target of attracting the not so traditional fan base, musicians Mzoe 7, La Dee and Msiz’kay alongside radio presenter B’Kay have been roped in ahead of a two-match Test series between the Chevrons and South Africa, set to get underway on June 28 at Queens Sports Club.

Dubbed “The Battle of the Limpopo”, the first Test will take place from June 28 to July 2 with the second scheduled for July 6 to 10.

This will be the first Test meeting between the Chevrons and the Proteas in eight years.

Zimbabwe Cricket Bulawayo Big Match chairperson Vumindaba Moyo said they had a brainstorming session and looked at partners who they felt had appeal to audiences outside traditional cricket norms.

“Queens is a Bulawayo venue hence we also looked at people who the locals can identify with. Of cause fame and influence played a big part. The obvious barometer is the numbers in the stands. We have in the past partnered with some of the bigger football clubs. Highlanders Chicken Inn, Byo Chiefs. We continue to cast our net wider to ensure the message reaches more publics.

“Sport and entertainment are intertwined. If people know where they can meet their socialites they are attracted. Like I said idea to attract people already not coming to cricket. We hope in the near future to give some artist a platform to perform for example national anthem or during breaks,” said Moyo.

Mzoe 7 said it’s an honour to be part of project as it helps raise awareness and promotion of the great sport of cricket, making the whole country understand the importance of celebrating their own.

“My platform as a personality helps to spread the message/promote the sport to a wider and new audience across the whole country as l unite both music lovers, fashion lovers and sports fanatics. I wish all the best to the Chevrons and i want to let them know that they inspire us as a nation,” he said.

Said Bkay:

“It’s truly an honour I almost see it as a national duty. The goal of this initiative is to reach out to listeners of my show and followers of my social media content, many of whom might not have known about the matches happening at Queens. We want to ignite excitement throughout the city and make sure everyone is aware that these games are taking place. I believe this is the first time something like this is being done here, and it’s a fantastic step forward.

“Looking ahead, there’s potential to involve even more people in future campaigns, though of course, budget constraints are always a consideration. On a personal note, this journey feels especially meaningful. As a youngster, I used to play cricket on the streets with planks and tennis balls we even formed a social team that played around the neighbourhood. So, to now be involved in promoting national team cricket, is an incredible experience,” said B’Kay

La Dee said she looks forward to contributing to the initiative’s success, helping to inspire and engage fans in new and innovative ways.

“Being part of the cricket community is a true privilege. It’s about embracing the spirit of the game, supporting our talented players, and connecting with passionate fans. As a personality, I’m excited to leverage my platform to highlight the team’s accomplishments, share the thrill of the game with new enthusiasts, and inspire others to discover the joy of cricket.

“It is an exciting sport and I’m surely a number fan. I’m looking forward to utilising my influence to promote the sport and contribute to its growing popularity,” she said.

Said Msiz’kay:

“I’m excited, super excited to be part of this amazing initiative to engage with people of Bulawayo on behalf of Zim Cricket as a Bulawayo native and a Bulawayo creative,” he said.
