Police in Gweru have busted a suspected second-hand clothing smuggling syndicate, arresting two suspects and recovering over 160 bales of clothing.
The raid was carried out at a house in Daylesford suburb in the early hours of today.
Officer Commanding Gweru District Urban, Chief Superintendent Dr Leon Marongedze, confirmed the arrest of two individuals.
“I can confirm that an anti-smuggling blitz conducted by the police resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of 164 second-hand bales. Some suspected smugglers fled from the scene when the raid was conducted by the police,” he said.
Chief Superintendent Marongedze said the smuggled goods, which include shoes, jackets, and trousers, were allegedly brought into the country from Mozambique.
“We are going to engage ZIMRA to ascertain the value of the smuggled goods,” he said.
