THE Zifa Southern Region chairman Lloyd Munhanga has raised alarm bells over the shocking goal drought gripping the league, with the leading scorers stuck on a paltry seven goals after 22 matches.
In an era when strikers banged in double figures with ease, some even netting seven in a single game back in the 80s, today’s forwards are firing blanks.
Bulawayo Chiefs’ Anesu Saiti and Hwange’s Marcellin Mlilo top the charts with seven apiece, hardly the stuff that gets fans chanting.
“Goals are what fans want to see. You can have all the dribbling and fancy play, but without goals there’s nothing to celebrate. Supporters leave stadiums feeling short-changed,” fumed Munhanga.
Log leaders Nkayi United have rattled in 35 goals so far, followed closely by Hwange on 34 and second-placed Bulawayo Chiefs on 31. Yet none of the three has a killer striker leading from the front — instead, goals are spread thinly across the squads.
The lack of a prolific finisher has left terraces quieter, and fans are demanding the kind of goal fest that once defined Southern Region football.
“Football without goals is like sadza without relish. Something must change,” said one disgruntled fan after a goalless draw at Luveve.
For now, it seems the nets remain lonely as strikers misfire, leaving the league desperate for a hero to bring back the goals.
