WILFRED Madzungu cannot stop scoring, and Central Region defenders are paying the price.
The Sheasham hitman was at it again over the weekend, smashing a hat trick in a 3–0 demolition of ZRP Gwanda to take his season tally to a staggering 23 goals. It was his third hat trick of the campaign, and a loud reminder that he’s the most dangerous man in front of goal right now.
That ruthless display kept Sheasham breathing down the neck of log leaders Hardrock, who edged Grain Tigers 1–0 at Mbizo Stadium to stay just a point ahead.
At 24, Madzungu has already outscored last season’s Golden Boot winner Edward Watson, who finished with 15 goals. His closest rival this year is veteran Donald Ngoma of Hardrock, nine goals behind on 14.
“I haven’t reached my best yet,” Madzungu told Zimpapers Sports Hub. “I know I can do better. It’s all about hunger, the hunger to score more and more. When the season started, I told myself I’d get past 25 goals, and I’m still chasing that.”
Madzungu’s goals have turned Sheasham into serious promotion contenders, with just four matches to go. But the striker insists it’s all about teamwork.
“I’ve got to give credit to my teammates,” he said. “They’ve been amazing all season. We keep pushing each other, and we believe we’ll finish strong.”
Hardrock lead the standings with 76 points, followed by Sheasham on 75. Gwanda Pirates’ title hopes took a knock after they were held 0–0 by Blanket Mine in the Gwanda derby.
