GREETINGS beloved nation in the name of Jesus Christ. Psalm 144:1, “Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.” As believers we might be knowing how to pray but do we know how to fight battles and wars? By battles and wars I don’t mean physical battles fought with guns and such weapons, I mean spiritual battles.
Many believers know how to pray, how to praise and worship God, how to speak in tongues, but when it comes to warfare they are helpless. At the first sign of being attacked by the enemy through sickness, calamity, death, broken relationships, loss of finances or jobs, they are quick to give up and start asking where God is. They are quick to through in the towel if they see that their situation has not changed after a few prayers. This is why we need to be taught warfare so that we may be able to withstand and after having done all to stand.
We would be foolish if we tried to face these battles without asking for the Lord’s help daily, and urgently. That’s why David prayed that train my fingers for war, and my hands for battle! In the life of a believer there is prayer, and then there is warfare.
The psalmist in Psalms 144:1 prays, “teach my hands to war“. So meaning that warfare has to be taught, it does not come automatically when we receive Christ, it is not imparted, nor do we receive it by the laying on of hands. Ephesians 6:12 says that we fight not against flesh and blood but against powers and principalities. So meaning there are battles that as believers we have to fight.

While in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 we are reminded that though the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (or physical), but are rather spiritual, yet are they mighty to the pulling down of the enemies strong holds, both in people’s lives and in this world. There is power in prayer and there is victory in warfare. So there are spiritual battles that we have to fight and there are spiritual weapons that we must use in these battles. The question is do we know how to fight these battles? The Bible tells us in Exodus 15:3 that, “The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.” So meaning that since we are his children, made in his image and after his likeness, we too are expected to be men and women of war.
The question is are we men and women of war like our father, the lord God almighty? He teaches us the art of war, and he furnishes his people with spiritual armour, to fight against their spiritual enemies; he teaches them how to put it on, and directs them how to make use of every piece of it.
The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:13 that, “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” So meaning in the life of every believer there is a day of evil because the scriptures says ‘‘when’’ the day of evil comes and not ‘‘if’’. So meaning that day will surely come and when it does we should be ready with the full armour of God.
God provides us with the armour to wear and not only that but He also trains our hands to war and our fingers to battle.
The scriptures tell us that David was a remarkable warrior who killed many men in hand-to-hand combat, as described in 1 Samuel 17:48-50 and 18:26-27. David was a man skilled in war. From his days as a shepherd boy to the days of serving in Saul’s army to leading his own army, David learnt to be a skilful warrior. How does one become a skilful warrior? Training is an essential part of success as a soldier, and David understood that it was the Lord who had trained his hands for war and his fingers for battle.
The Lord who is our rock, He trains, builds up, and teaches us warfare. In the Psalm, He taught David’s hands and fingers how to war and battle. Over time, the repetition and patience paid off. David’s hands were trained for war. His fingers knew what to do in battle. Notice the bible says ‘trains’ not ‘trained’ so meaning the training is continuous. The only way one can become a skilful warrior is to be trained and placed in the middle of the battle. It is only when we are placed in the furnace of battle that we truly learn to fight the real battles.

Practice doesn’t make you ready for battle. War games won’t prepare you for facing your real enemy in the battlefield. The reality of being in the middle of the battle makes us effective warriors. Simply reading your Bible will not make you a warrior for the Kingdom. Knowledge without experience is not enough, it’s just knowledge. Only when you are placed in situations where there is nothing or no one who can save you but God will you learn the lessons of warfare.
This is the training ground of God, which will make us into a soldier for Christ. Though most of us may not be engaged in physical warfare, God’s word tells us we are always battling “against the spiritual forces of evil” (Eph. 6:12). We need to remember that a war is waging, and a real enemy seeks to destroy us. Spiritual warfare is our ongoing fight against sin — anything that opposes God and His purposes.
But we need not despair because God is with us in the battle. Throughout His Word, God has graciously warned us about the reality of spiritual warfare, and He has offered Himself as the one who trains “(our) hands for war, and (our) fingers for battle” I would like to invite you to receive Jesus as your personal Lord and saviour, by believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that He is your Lord and saviour, and you shall be saved.
