THE Hwange Local Board (HLB) has given the residents of Empumalanga suburb an ultimatum to replace squat toilets with sitting toilets by 28 February as part of the efforts to curb sewer blockages.
In a statement, Hwange Local Board spokesperson Mr Dumisani Nsingo said those that fail to replace squat toilets will be subjected to a penalty of US$20. He said council police in Hwange and the sewer task team have been moving door to door identifying houses that were still using squat toilets.

“It has come to our attention that some households are still using squat toilets thus clogging our sewer reticulation system and leading to recurrent blockages and bursts,” said Mr Nsingo.

He said last year council called on property owners using squat toilets to replace them with sitting toilets as the local authority had been battling to dispose solid human waste for over 10 years after the breakdown of the Empumalanga treatment plant.
He said the breakdown impacted negatively on council’s ability to effectively manage the environment in a sustainable way in its area of jurisdiction hence the call for residents to migrate to sitting toilets.
