Goddard wins second title

The Bulawayo golfer won this year’s edition of the Midlands Amateur Strokeplay, which attracted a small field.
The golfers had three tournaments in a row, starting with the Lowveld Pro-Am, the Leopard Rock Classic before they went into the Midlands Amateur, which was the final tourney of the season.
Goddard is quickly establishing himself as one of the top contenders in the amateur ranks and carded 72, 75, 71 and 71 to beat the other golfers in the championship division.
The absence of the country’s leading amateur Clive Nguru, busy with his examinations, was felt.
Zimbabwe coach, Roger Baylis, expressed concern at the low turnout and wants the corporate world to help golfers, who need to take part in such events.
“The golfers had a tight schedule at the end of the season and the costs associated were the major factor which resulted in the low turnout. We will be grateful if the corporate world chips in to help in such situations so that everyone can take part in national tournaments. The golfers were coming from three consecutive tournaments and the costs associated saw most of them pulling out, otherwise the game was very competitive,” Baylis said.
Zimbabwe national team captain Emmanuel Hungwe was second on 75, 72, 76 and 70.
Meanwhile the Zimbabwe amateur golf team is likely to miss the Central Gauteng Open Championships because of lack of funds.
The team, which is in camp, is rushing against time to take part in the tournament, which is scheduled for next week at the Royal Johannesburg and Kengsington Golf Club.
The ZGA do not have funds to bankroll the trips. Hungwe believes they could do very well if they make the trip.
“I think we have a strong team that can pose a good challenge in international tournaments,” Hungwe said.
