GODLWAYO Primary School Wushu Club stole the show with a commendable exhibition at the Olympic Day Celebrations at White City Stadium on Sunday. Wushu is one of martial art sports from China which is neither karate nor kung fu but an exhibition sport which has less contact. It was established in 1949 and Bruce Lee remains one of the most popular exponents of the discipline.
Bulawayo Wushu Association vice-chairperson Giyani Moyo was happy that they got a chance to exhibit on a big stage like the Olympic Day Celebrations.
“It was good chance to exhibit at the Olympic Day Celebrations as many people now know what wushu is all about,” said Moyo.
He however, said he was not pleased with the slow development of sport and hopes other associations will come on board as Godlwayo is the only school with a wushu club in Bulawayo. The sport has in the past enjoyed popularity in Old Pumula with Master Ndo who travelled extensively in a bid to expose it.
“Wushu is taking long to appeal to schools. We want to liaise with other associations such as National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) and National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) so that we find how best we can promote the sport,” he said
Bulawayo Wushu Club instructor Simbarashe Mutibgwichi said they want to introduce the sport at grassroots’ level. Lucky Mlilo one of the local organising committee members for the Olympic Day Celebrations said he was pleased with the wushu displays.
“Few people know what wushu is all about but after the displays, many now know the sport,” said Mlilo.
