VETERAN musician Leonard “Karikoga” Zhakata says he is overwhelmed with gratitude as he reflects on a life and career that have been defined by God’s grace after celebrating his 58th birthday last week.
Just two years away from his Diamond Jubilee, the celebrated singer-songwriter and lyrical genius believes his enduring success, relevance and respect in the music industry are all a testament to God’s favour.
The Mugove hit-maker celebrated the milestone in style at Sherwood Golf Club in Mabelreign, Harare, last weekend, surrounded by family, friends and loyal fans.
Despite spending decades in the music industry, Zhakata continues to captivate audiences with timeless songs and believes he remains blessed beyond measure.
“Words are not enough to thank the Almighty for what He has done for me over the years,” Zhakata told Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub.
“For me to be here celebrating my 58th birthday is a huge milestone.
“I am grateful for what God has done for me, and I will always cherish His goodness for years to come.
“As a musician, I feel honoured to celebrate this milestone with my fans. I will continue doing my best to give them quality music and memorable performances.”
Zhakata also paid tribute to his loyal supporters for standing by him throughout his illustrious career.
“I am humbled whenever fans come out in their numbers to support me, as they have done today.
“I didn’t anticipate such a huge turnout, but God is great all the time. I will continue praising Him for all the good things He has done for me.”
Known for his impeccable dress sense and youthful appearance, Zhakata said musicians have a responsibility to look after themselves and uphold their public image.
“We need to take proper care of ourselves and pray all the time.
“The way we carry ourselves in public plays a significant role in maintaining our brands.
“I am very particular about how I present myself, and I believe that discipline has contributed to the man I am today.”
Among those who attended the celebrations was businessman and devoted fan Cosmas Daka, popularly known as Cossy Rules, who travelled from Kadoma for the occasion.
“I have always been Leonard Zhakata’s fan, and I respect everything he has done for the music industry,” said Daka.
“I have followed his music since I was young, and I will continue supporting him in every way I can.
“I make it a point not to miss his birthday celebrations because he is my role model.
“He has also honoured me by attending my birthday celebrations every November, and I cannot thank him enough for believing in me.”
Daka, who has established himself as a miner in Kadoma, said Zhakata had played a pivotal role in shaping his character.
“I have learnt a lot from him in terms of grooming, discipline and etiquette.
“He has always been a pillar in my life, offering valuable advice whenever I needed guidance.
“With Zhakata, you are bound to learn a lot because he is an intelligent man who understands life.”
He added:
“Zhakata is one of the most God-fearing people you could ever meet.
“Having someone of his calibre in your life is something to cherish.
“I am grateful to have met and befriended him. With Zhakata, you will never go wrong because he understands life and always wants the best for others.
“Each time that he visits Kadoma, he makes sure that he checks on me and that alone means a lot to me because we have now become family. I also feel comfortable visiting him because we have become family.” Belonging to the same generation as Alick Macheso, who also turned 58 in June, and the late Tongai Moyo, Zhakata needs little introduction on Zimbabwe’s music landscape.
His timeless catalogue has touched millions of hearts, with songs that resonate across generations and address themes ranging from love, unity and poverty to faith, hope and perseverance. As he edges closer to his 60th birthday, Leonard Zhakata remains one of Zimbabwe’s most respected musicians — a gifted composer, exceptional lyricist and humble servant of God whose music continues to inspire and uplift people from all walks of life.
