The Gokwe community has been left in a shock and sorrow after a herd boy and a maid were sentenced to a combined 50 years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl.
The sentences, handed down by Regional Magistrate Stanley Mambanje, mark a strong stand against a crime that shattered the life of an innocent 11-year-old.
The 21-year-old herd boy was convicted of three counts of rape and received a total of 35 years in jail.
The 39-year-old maid, who actively participated in the abuse, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for two counts of rape.
This victim’s ordeal began in January 2024 in Mambwere Village, Chief Njelele, Gokwe South. The young girl, just a child at the time, was sleeping peacefully beside her grandmother when the herd boy crept into the house, removed his trousers, and sexually assaulted her.
When the girl tried to report the attack, he threatened and raped her, silencing her with fear.
The situation worsened in April 2025 when the maid joined in the abuse. Todwegether, the pair forced the girl to watch pornographic videos before the herd boy raped her again.
The maid, instead of protecting the child, directed the assault and threatened the girl with violence to ensure her silence.
The pair repeated the horrific ordeal on another occasion, leaving the girl trapped in fear and despair.
It was not until last month that the truth came to light. The young girl finally confided in her aunt, who took her to a Victim Friendly Unit clinic for medical assistance. A police report was filed, leading to the arrest of both the herd boy and the maid.
During the trial, prosecutor Ms Gertrude Shoko presented overwhelming evidence, including medical reports confirming the abuse. Magistrate Mambanje condemned the pair’s actions, highlighting the immense physical and emotional harm inflicted on the child.
“This court cannot ignore the seriousness of these crimes,” said Magistrate Mambanje as he handed down the sentences. “The damage done to this young girl will haunt her for the rest of her life.”
