GOLDEN Eagles are a massive 14 points off the pace but they have still refused to rule themselves out of the Northern Region Soccer League title race.
The Harare side spent a significant period in close pursuit of leaders N’ombeyawora and second-placed Agama.
But they went off rail, allowing both N’ombeyawora and Agama to pull away in what has been an intriguing competition at the top.
With nine more games still to be played, Golden Eagles coach Arthur Gorejena believes they still stand a good chance of getting promotion into the Premier Soccer League by the end of the season.
Golden Eagles were in terrific form over the weekend, Trevor Bhunu’s brace ensures a 2-0 away win to Trojan Stars.
However, both N’ombeyawora and Agama posted victories of their own, the former winning 2-0 at Banket United with the latter dumping Karoi United 2-1 at Pfura.
Gorejena said, “We are fully alive to the fact that it’s now difficult to say we will finish as the winners in the NRSL, yes, but we will never throw in the towel.
“There are still 27 points to be competed for. That’s a lot if you ask me, and we can’t really rule ourselves out of the running for a pole position just yet.
“The NRSL is one of the most closely contested leagues in the country with so many twists and turns happening at any given moment.
“So when you look at it, the leading two clubs can still encounter humps that we have also endured in our journey and we can capitalise fully.
“Yes, it’s difficult but we will fight until the very end.”
With the top remaining a closely fought post, there were twists and turns down the relegation zone.
Ali Sundowns beat Ngezi U-19 to move from 19th to 16th and out of the relegation zone. But Shamva Mine, who are in the basement, sank even deeper after losing 1-0 to Black Mambas.
Chinhoyi Stars, who lost 0-1 to Zambezi G & C are now third from bottom with PAM, another 0-1 losers to Chinhoyi Rangers completing the bottom four with 31 points to their name.
