WARRIORS Coach Zdravko Logarusic says the Afcon finals will present the perfect opportunity for the current crop of national team players to prove they are the country’s golden generation.
After sealing qualification for the third time in a row, many believe the present squad is the country’s golden generation and many comparisons have been drawn between the present squad and the Dream Team of the early 1990s, but it’s a debate that has never been settled.
If anything, the Warriors’ journey to the 2022 finals has been like no other. For the first time they qualified with a game to spare and head coach Zdravko Logarusic even made history for himself by becoming the first foreign coach to lead the Warriors to the Afcon finals.
Even the draw conducted on Tuesday night appears to have smiled on them after they were drawn in the same group with Senegal, Malawi and Guinea, but Logarusic thinks otherwise.
“We have heard many people saying we have been given an easy group, which is not true because all the teams that have qualified are there for a reason, so no one is easy there. We respect everyone there and we will treat every team with respect,” said Loga.
“This is the golden generation of football and it’s their time to shine, but we have to be prepared. We should learn from the past Afcon mistakes and properly prepare for the finals.
“I am very sure that we will do better than what most people are expecting. The first step is trying to get past the group stage properly and then we take it from there.”
The Warriors will open their 2021 Afcon finals campaign against Senegal’s Teranga Lions, whose quest could once again be spearheaded by Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane, on January 10. — @innocentskizoe
