Golf team finishes third

ZIMBABWE girls’ golf team finished third at the Africa Junior Girls Tournament at Nyali Beach Country Club in Mombasa, Kenya, recently. The tournament saw the hosts winning the team award with 708 points and swept the individual prizes.

Naomi Wafula won the tournament on 16-over-par 229 after the three day-event while her teammate Kellie Gachaga was seven strokes behind her on 23-over-par. Zambia finished second with a total of 748 points, with Zimbabwe in third with 801 points. Danielle Bekker, who shot a combined score of 251, finished 38-over-par and ended in sixth place.

The 12-year-old Bekker, who has since broken into the senior national team, showed that she is still one to beat in the local junior’s championship division. Zimbabwe competed with Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria and hosts Kenya as Algeria and Tunisia withdrew at the final minute.

Margaret Nyamukondiwa finished in tied ninth place. Daniella Banda came 11th on 279 while Nomatter Chikutwe finished in 12th place.
