Golf’s New Groove: The swing towards cultural heritage……..as unique golf event sees totems tee off

Golf in Zimbabwe is undergoing a transformation from its traditional, conservative roots to becoming a more dynamic and inclusive sport.

This shift is marked by the emergence of more pro and amateur events, trendy apparel brands, and totem tournaments , all adding a new level of excitement and appeal.

As the sport evolves, it is becoming more accessible to a wider, more diverse audience; so,  how is this helping to boost cultural exchange opportunities?

One effort at powering this movement is Mutupo/Isibongo Golf, a social golf tournament played in nine of the ten administrative provinces of Zimbabwe.

The inherent features of the sport, being in nature, strolling through green fairways and enjoying casual competition with friends, were newly valued make the cultural mix an almost seamless addition to the traditional golf landscape. With the added aspect of cultural exchanges, this time of contemplation and reassessment has made many people recognise the therapeutic and social benefits of golf which led to a revival in its popularity in the country.

“The tournament is a unique golf tournament which seems to promote, our rich cultural heritage through the Mutupo Isibongo culture,” revealed the events organiser, Ephraim Mashingaidze.

About the tournament format, Mahingaidze said: “Golfers play in the tournament and their scores will contribute to their Mutupo Isibongo.”

Mashingaidze revealed Surrey Group, Proton & Lake Harvest as brand partners of the tournament. Participating golfers who play and win in the tournament will walk away with Surrey Group, Proton and Lake Harvest product hampers.

“Participants range from Professional golfers , amateurs, junior golfers, pensioners for both theen and ladies categories,” added Mashingaidza.

Some of the Mutupo’s Isibongo’s who have golfers representing in the ongoing 2024 series include:

Dziva, Gumbo, Mhofu, Shumba, Ngara, Mbizi, Humba, Mukanya, Hwesa, Hungwe, Beta, Gwai, Nzou, Nhewa, Mheta, Chihwa, Nyati, Gushungo, Bhebhe, Mhara, amd Moyo.

“Our Mutupo Isibongo  culture greatly helps us to preserve and appreciate our Wildlife and natural environment.

“Most of the Mutupo Isibongo culture have animal resemblance, symbols , representation and thus the concept has direct impact to the importance of preserving wildlife and nature,” Mashingaidze said.

Meanwhile, this year marks a great milestone for the Mutupo Isibongo Golf brand as the tournament is set host a United Kingdom edition on 20 and 21 July in Warwickshire.
