THE Beitbridge West Community joined the rest of Zimbabwe in celebrating Independence.
They gathered at Mutangamuchena Primary School for an event that lasted three days with sport part of the festivities. Member of Parliament for Gwanda Tshitaudze, Fisani Moyo sponsored the event. The tournament provided many activities for locals some of whom sold their wares as people supported the local economy. The tournament organiser Rofhiwa Tshitaudze said 29 teams fought for the R17000 prize money at stake in soccer and netball Independence competitions between April 16-18.
“There were 16 soccer teams and 13 netball. Our celebrations were sponsored by our Hounorable MP Fisani Moyo.
“The best teams got R5 000, the second walked away with R2 500, third and fourth scooped R1 500 from fifth to eighth position, the prize money was 800 rands and position 9 to 16 each got R600.
The top three also got uniforms,” said Tshitaudze.
He said the community benefited from the celebrations because the MP used it as a platform to teach the youths about Independence and how to perpetuate the legacy of Independence, the dangers of drug and substance abuse and other activities which are not good for their health. Through this tournament, youths were taught more about their Independence, they are kept occupied because our MP sponsors other tournaments in the community and they are now helping each other to look and learn new skills.
Moyo said he was happy with what he had seen of projects in his area.
