Gondo wins gold at Karate tourney

open semi-contact invitational karate tournament on Saturday.
The tournament, which was hosted by Prince Edward School in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Karate Association, attra-cted participants from five schools – Warren Park, Mkoba 1 High, Highfield High 1, Thornhill and the hosts.
Participants took part in team and individual events in the Under-14, Under-16 and the Open category.
Gondo beat Tatenda Zimba in the finals to clinch the title while Sylvester Chipfumbu of Mkoba 1 High settled for third position.
Nyasha Kumire of Prince Edward clinched the title in the Under-16 category after beating Dean Ramsey from Highfield High 1.
Derrick Mukutya finished third.
In the Under-14 age-group, Emerson Njambe of Prince Edward overpowered Kelvin Makutya of Thornhill to scoop a gold medal while Mitchell Mazauya came third.
The Prince Edward A team went on to win a gold medal in the team events while their B team came second to walk away with a silver medal.
Thornhill A settled for third position.
ZKA president Simba Chikutu was impressed with the level of competition and said they were expecting more competitions from the schools.
“It was a good competition though we expected more schools to take part in this event. If all the schools had brought full teams we would have had a tight competition but it ended up being Prince Edward versus Thornhill,” said Chikutu.
Chikutu said they are hoping to have more schools competitions as the national association embarks on a junior development programme.
“We are going to be having more of these tournaments both at secondary and primary school levels but the competitions will be held separately.
“Thornhill will be hosting another schools competition but they are still to come up with the actual dates for it,” said Chikutu.
