FILABUSI has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Chief Ndube, born Nonhlanhla Sibanda, a rare female traditional leader who made history in Matabeleland South.
She was just 40.
Chief Ndube took the reins of power in 2007 at the tender age of 22, after a bruising six-year chieftainship battle within the Sibanda clan following her father, Chief Andrew Sibanda’s death in 2001.
Her trailblazing appointment was a first in her community, a bold move in a male, dominated traditional system.
Matabeleland South acting Director of Local Government and Public Works, Mr Zachariah Jusa, confirmed her passing, as did Chief Vuyani Nyangazonke Ndiweni.
“Yes, unfortunately, it is true that Chief Ndube has passed on. For more information, please get in touch with Chief Staudze,” said Chief Ndiweni.
She is survived by her husband and several children.
Her reign may have started with controversy, but Chief Ndube earned respect for her firm leadership and community development work in Filabusi.
A queen among chiefs, now gone too soon.
