A BINGA village has been plunged into mourning after a horrifying incident where a two-year-old toddler was fatally scalded by hot porridge meant for brewing traditional beer.
The heart-wrenching tragedy occurred on Tuesday at Nzovunde Village in Binga, where the toddler reportedly fell into a large metal container holding about 40 litres of steaming-hot porridge. The porridge had been left unattended by the child’s grandmother as she prepared to brew traditional beer.

“The ZRP confirms a tragic incident in Nzovunde Village, Binga, on 3 June 2025,” said police in a statement. “A two-year-old fell into a metal dish of hot porridge and sustained severe burns. The child sadly died the following day, 4 June 2025.”
Sources say the grandmother had stepped away briefly, unaware that the curious toddler was nearby.

By the time help arrived, the burns were already too severe. The little one fought for life but succumbed to the injuries a day later, leaving the family and entire village in shock.
Police have urged caregivers to remain vigilant, especially around hot substances and cooking areas, to avoid more lives being lost in such avoidable tragedies.
