A 20-YEAR-OLD destitute stole $350 from his employer who had removed him from the streets and offered him employment.
Mthokozisi Ncube who stole from his employer Mjuberg Dube, 66, was sentenced to six months imprisonment. He will however serve an effective four months imprisonment after two months of the sentence were suspended on condition that he is not within the next five years convicted of a similar offence.
Passing sentence, Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo said a custodial sentence was the most appropriate since Ncube was of no fixed abode.
“I can’t sentence you to community service because we don’t know where to find you if you decide to run away. You can’t pay a fine because you can’t raise the money,” he said.
The court heard that on November 27 at around 10AM, Dube left Ncube in his car where he had left his wallet with $350.
Ncube took advantage of the situation and left his bags and ran away with Dube’s money. Dube noticed that his money was missing and reported the matter to the police leading to Ncube’s arrest.
Ncube was convicted on his own plea.
Dube told the court that he had employed Ncube as a caretaker at his rural home after removing him from the streets.
