A woman from Retreat Farm in Waterfalls, who allegedly attempted to kill her 18-month-old baby by drowning him in a dam, was brought before the courts for remand over the weekend.

The woman was arrested after a passer-by leapt into Retreat Dam to rescue the toddler.

Junior Mafura (18) from Retreat Farm appeared before Harare magistrate, Mrs Estere Chivasa charged with attempted murder and was remanded in custody to August 16 for her bail application.

Prosecutor, Ms Mercy Masamvi, alleged that last Friday, at around 8am, Mr Simbarashe Magada was walking home using a path alongside Retreat Dam when he saw Mafura walking away from the dam. He became suspicious and went to where she was coming from. Upon reaching the dam bank, Magada saw the baby floating in the water and immediately jumped into the dam and rescued him.

Mr Magada then followed Mafura who was now running away and caught up with her at Mutamba Shops and took her to the police station.
