MANICALAND is targeting to have Level One rugby coaches and referees in every district by mid-2016, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union Manicaland secretary has said.
Mackenzie Munetsi said the provincial board will continue conducting the Level One training courses and carry them out in all the districts in the province.
Zimbabwe Rugby Referees in conjunction with ZRU held the referee Level One touch judging course last week Saturday at Mutare Sports Club, which was attended by 25 participants from Primary and Secondary schools from different districts.
“The turnout was great and I am pleased that participants from districts like Nyanga and Chipinge are coming through. It was a theory based course and each participant was expected to attend all the modules. An examination based on the modules was written at the end of the course and the certificates will be issued later this month,” said Munetsi.
World Rugby-Zimbabwe educator, Walter Njowa said the course would cut costs for Manicaland clubs and schools that often have to take into service Harare certified referees.
“This course is part of rugby developmental initiative that we are conducting throughout the country, especially in cities other than Harare or Bulawayo. Mutare has only two certified referees but this course will capacitate more people in the province to be qualified to referee matches professionally,” said Njowa.
Njowa said the target of trainers in schools was meant to prop-up modern expertise in refereeing schools rugby.
Last month ZRU conducted a Level One coaching course at in Mutare where 20 participants took part. Munetsi welcomed the recent initiatives by ZRU to capacitate coaches and referees outside Harare and Bulawayo.
He thanked the provincial coordinators Casper Bande and Brendon Chombo who have been pushing the programmes mobilising participants and resources for the training programmes.
