…Iconic Harare hotel under the hammer for US$2m
H-Metro Reporter
THE iconic Hotel Elizabeth, or simply Liz, is up for sale.
Named after Queen Elizabeth, the hotel opened its doors in 1975.
It was placed under liquidation in 2018.
Owners have estimated its value at US$2.1 million.
The hotel gave a platform to established and aspiring musicians at its peak.
Among the greats, who staged concerts at Hotel Elizabeth, are the late national hero, Oliver Mtukudzi, Chimurenga music maestro, Thomas Mapfumo, the Pied Piers and Jackson Phiri.
Most views on various social media platforms suggested the owners were being unreasonable by demanding a huge amount for a property they say is now in a state of disrepair.
However, its location, in the heart of Harare’s CBD, means it will always be a million dollar property.
Some even went as far as prophesying that a new mall was beckoning at the hotel.
Hotel Liz is also the home of the Star Bar, located along Julius Nyerere Way, which is a part of the city’s folklore.
