Gorowa hits out at Cosafa Under-20 standards

Gorowa is the Mamelodi Sundowns chief scout.
“This year the standard is below what we expected,” he said.
Gorowa said coaches had forgotten about the developmental aspect of the tournament and played only to win. “You will not develop without quality. We want to see quality in the Under-20 players,” he said.

Gorowa said it was evident that some of the countries had not taken their time to prepare for the tournament, an indication that they were not taking it seriously.
Zimbabwe is one of the countries that did not prepare adequately for the tournament with the coach given only a week to come up with a winning team.
The country was third in Group D after drawing against Namibia 1-1, losing to Angola 3-2 and drawing against Madagascar 5-5.

Against Madagascar, Zimbabwe was the first to score but failed to hold on to the lead and the Islanders came back to score five.
Zimbabwe scored their goals through Trevor Mutero, Edwin Nkomo, Ronald Chitiyo and a brace from Munyaradzi Muchenje.
“Some countries did not prepare for the tournament on time. They do not take the tournament seriously and started preparing a week before. This is where development starts,” said Gorowa.

He said there were a lot of shortcomings in coaching as some coaches were coming up with complicated formations that confused players.
With countries like Tanzania it was evident that they were using the 4-4-2 formation but with countries such as Zimbabwe it was not clear,” he said.

Gorowa said the standard was different compared to last year especially the  Zimbabwe team where a number of players emerged.
This year only about three Zimbabwean players made an impact during the tournament while the rest seemed out of form.

Gorowa however said Zimbabwe had a lot of talent that needed to be developed.
“In Africa, we have the talent but we are failing to develop that talent. Very few teams stood out at this year’s Cosafa. Teams should prepare in advance for such tournaments and come well prepared. If they are not prepared they should not come because it is embarrassing,” he said.
