The India-based Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said yesterday that Tenzin Phuntsog died on Tuesday in a hospital in Tibet’s Chamdo region, known in Chinese as Changdu.
He reportedly set himself on fire near the Karma monastery there on 1 December. It was the latest self-immolation protest by Tibetans against Chinese rule.
The rights group says he had distributed leaflets criticising Chinese rule before setting himself on fire.
An official at the Changdu county police station said he was not aware of any self-immolations in the region while calls to the county hospital rang unanswered. — Sapa.
