BULAWAYO gospel fans were left asking for more after Mahendere Brothers and Gospel Power gave a polished performance at the Textile Mills on Saturday afternoon. The Gospel Extravaganza show lived up to expectations as warm up performances by local groups did not disappoint. The locals proved they could compete with the best on the gospel scene.
Harare-based Fiona Chinembiri took to the stage just before Gospel Power and her music had fans on their feet. Fiona was later joined on stage by Amos Mahendere as he danced to her Nigerian beats much to the delight of the fans. Gospel Power came after Chinembiri and they raised the bar even higher.
With Pastor Lawrence Gunda and Kenneth Suwaleyi doing the vocals, one could be excused for concluding the group was playing a CD as the music came out exactly as it does on their CD. The group also made up of Godfrey Mazinyana and Lovemore Gunda, dished out hits from their first album, Tafura, much to the delight of the fans.
In an interview, Kenneth Suwaleyi said they had seen how fans love them in Bulawayo and were planning to come back to their home town for shows sometime this year.
“We are planning to hold a show some time this year at How Mine. We grew up at How Mine and we want to revisit the old days, be with family and friends again. We are planning to give back to the place because that is where we spent our childhood,” he said.
The main act came from the Mahendere brothers and like all the performances on the day, they left fans asking for more. Amos mesmerised fans with his latest dance moves. The group last staged a show in Bulawayo in 2009.
With new dance routines and new faces in the group, Amos showed he had an able team and is ready to do what he knows best.
After the show, organising Pastor Tafadzwa Zuva said they were happy with show and were already planning another one.
“We saw how happy the people were and want to have another show some time in October. People enjoyed themselves and we showed that even in church we can have fun,” he said.
Fans could not hide their excitement and called upon local promoters and churches to organise many such family shows.
“My brother you saw how happy people were today, I saw my mother and sister dancing and I want to encourage local promoters and other churches to do organise more of these in the future,” said Pardon Mazongo.
