PROGRESS Chipfumo-inspired musician Blessing Makomeya (31) has released a six-track gospel project laced with biblical teachings titled Nemiwo Makaropafadzwa.
Makomeya fuses traditional instruments like mbira, congas, keyboards and guitars in a distinct way that makes the album unique and worth listening to. The album, which was recorded at Revival Studios, promises to be a hit in Mutare and beyond.
In an interview, Makomeya said he tackles social issues that affect Christians such as hatred, poverty, faith and insecurity.
He developed a passion for music in 2000 when he started singing in church.
He is also a sound engineer who has worked with various artistes such as sungura musician Brian Samaita and Hungwe Stars frontman Simba Muchita.
Muchita features on the album as a bass guitarist.
Tracks on the album are Mbira Nehosho, Kunze Kune Mapere, Tivhumbamirei, Moyo Wekurevesa, Usarase Tariro and Tiyamurei Hossanna.
“Traditional instruments like mbira and congas are synonymous with our Shona culture so I decided to include them in my album.
“By doing this I fused various genres such as shangara, passada and jazz. I love the way Progress Chipfumo fuses various traditional and modern instruments. The late Andy Brown as well as local musician Josiah Simango also inspired me to come up with this unique product,” said the talented singer.
He hopes to record a live DVD in the near future. He paid tribute to people who mentored his music career to where it is now, such as Reverend Mutsaka, Brian Samaita and Simba Muchita.
