It’s a New Year once again and there is reason to celebrate life and worship God who is our creator and giver of life and good health.
As we begin the New Year, we as Christians should take the step of cementing our relationship with God through a careful selection of our music, films, literature or anything that relaxes the mind during our leisure time.

In order to be safe from wrong influences of evil which often distract people from their goal of reaching a closer relationship with Christ, there is need to rethink how people study the bible with a view to improving how they understand and internalise lessons learnt from scriptures.

To achieve a closer walk with Jesus, Christians should be able to develop habits of a rigorous study of the bible as individuals and as groups at home and at church.

Such habits are a vital step towards achieving spiritual growth and enhancing one’s knowledge and understanding of God and His kingdom.

These days, with the increasing number of theological texts, or material based on topics from the bible, the need for a rigorous study of the bible is even more.

Many of these texts present conflicting views on Christianity with the end result being that people often fail to understand the exact gospel to believe.

Such texts come in various forms for example literature, music or songs, works of art such as stone sculpture and graphic images.

For people who are not well versed in scriptures, their chances of losing focus in the wake of receiving many of these texts are greatly enhanced.

What is true however is that many of these texts are deliberately aimed at preaching a counterfeit gospel whose end result would be to instil doubts among seekers of God’s truth of the relevance of worship and prayer in their lives.

To counter this, Christians should be able to spare more time to a careful study of scriptures in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of their faith.

For those gifted in art and craft their contribution in church and society cannot be underestimated. Using creative means, such individuals should be able to enlighten others on concepts of salvation and eternal life so as to develop interest in a Christian life among others.

The texts they produce can be vital as they challenge counterfeit gospel which has now flooded the world. This will help enlighten many on what constitutes true Christianity.

Since theological texts are always powerful symbols of knowledge on religion how they are handled and presented to people is something that need to be treated with caution.

Looking at gospel music, conflicting doctrinal messages on Christianity by artistes has its own dangers such as that of leading astray many that may be more inclined towards learning the bible from others other than studying on their own.

Music is therefore more prone to influences of evil, especially when we consider how many songs these days seem to emphasize more on artist’s lyrical prowess and creativity, while relegating pertinent issues of salvation and eternal life which are centred on a life in Christ.

Some gospel videos are populated with images of luxury and beauty such as expensive cars, jewellery, and fashionable designer’s clothes yet less is mentioned on God being the supreme authority and giver of life.

But the truth about such gospel, which is disguised as Christian music, is that it is wholly centred on materialism, also known as idolatry in theological terms.

There are numerous reasons why Christians in this day and age should develop habits of a rigorous study of the bible.

One of these is that through a more focused study of scriptures one is able to discern whether or not texts presented to them are genuine gospel.

The same applies with poetic songs such as hymns which depend heavily on usage of imagery. How these are analysed and internalised depends to a large extent on how much one is grounded in scriptures.

Artistes have also a lot to benefit from a rigorous study of the bible. This can be reflected in the care and attention they give to their selection of themes in song writing, producing musical videos or when they are creating their various art pieces for teaching the word of God.

Armed with true gospel of Christ artistes can be so inspired to respond effectively to societal problems through composing texts that nature and develop an interest in the word of God among God’s people.

Ordinary believers also benefit from a rigorous study of scriptures through discerning texts and being able to dismiss heretic messages preached to them using any creative means.
