THE Zion Christian Church (ZCC) has for many years been a beacon of spiritual enrichment in Zimbabwe but, beyond its spiritual role, it has also emerged as a vibrant incubator for musical talent.
The church is renowned for its vibrant musical legacy, characterised by traditional sounds, captivating dances, and unforgettable melodies.
This rich heritage has yielded a catalogue of hit songs, soul-stirring gospel hymns and exceptional musicians.
Evidently, the church has placed premium standards on music and has invested in nurturing musicians and creating a rich musical heritage.
One notable artist to emerge from the ZCC is Obert Chari, the talented lyricist and composer behind the 2017 hit song “Mebho.”
Hailing from Bikita, the birthplace of ZCC founder Samuel Mutendi, Chari’s musical career was launched right within the church’s walls and continues to borrow a lot from the church.
“I started singing in choirs in the ZCC before I became a solo artist,” he said.
“Fellow church members heard what I was singing and encouraged me to record.”
Since his breakout hit in 2017, Chari has continued to make waves on the musical scene.
“I recorded my first song and the producer was impressed,” Chari said.
“I was advised to mix and try something natural and it worked.
“People received my music with open hands because it was different from what we did in the choirs and the church.”
Chari’s refreshed sound increased his demand and bookings are now even coming from bar owners.
“If I go and perform in a bar, it does not mean I will get drunk,” he noted.
“The year must not end without giving something to our listeners.
“An EP featuring various artists is coming and we aim to spread joy during the festive season.
“I am a free person who wants to learn new things, as I continue to grow, I am not just a product of the ZCC, I also want to give hope and inspiration to other artists.”
