Bad luck seems to follow gospel singer Sechaba Pali. From rape charges, to fights with record labels and having his home broken into, Pali has seen it all and he now has to deal with death threats.
The singer has reportedly been receiving death threats since visiting the Matjhabeng Local Municipality in Welkom last week Wednesday to collect his R120000 cheque for appearance fees.
In an exclusive interview, Pali told the SundayWorld that he has been receiving threats from people warning him not to lay charges against executive mayor Sebenzile Ngangelizwe.
“I phoned MEC for Social Development Sisi Mantombela on Tuesday and complained that these people were refusing to pay me for the six shows I did last year. After a while she phoned me and said the matter was sorted and handed her phone over to Ngangelizwe who told me to come to Welkom to collect my money on Wednesday,” he said.
Ngangelizwe is said to have demanded to see evidence or an invoice which Pali could not produce.
The mayor then stormed out of the office leaving the gospel singer alone for more than an hour.
Later the gospel singer found Ngangelizwe and asked him to organise him money for petrol so he could return to Joburg for the invoice but his request fell on deaf ears.
“Pali said when he was driving out of the premises, a bakkie blocked his way and several municipal guards ran to his car and started assaulting him,” SundayWorld reports.
“They kicked and punched me several times even when I was lying on the ground begging them to stop,” he said.
A pregnant woman whom Pali had given a lift was also allegedly assaulted by the guards.
“She started bleeding and was taken by someone from the scene. I don’t know this woman, I didn’t even take her cellphone number. She approached me in town and asked me for money to buy food. Because I was hopeful that I would be paid I asked her to come with me to the municipal offices. I’m now trying to locate her and find out if she and the baby were OK,” he said.
The singer did not open a case against his attackers but is now reconsidering his decision after receiving phone threats.
