Government applauded for banning alluvial mining

The Residents Against Land Degradation (RALD) have welcomed Government’s ban on riverbed or alluvial mining saying it was long overdue.
In a press statement released yesterday, RALD said riverbed mining has resulted in land degradation.
“The destruction of areas such as Boterekwa escarpment through mechanised mining proves that land degradation through mining should be stopped or closely monitored,” reads part of the statement.

“We have also witnessed the damage to the environment on other natural features countrywide. Gravel and base metal mining have been the main causes of land degradation.”
RALD urged the Government to go a step further by ensuring that those responsible for land degradation rehabilitate the areas.
The organisation also urged other stakeholders to play a role in protecting the environment.
