GOVERNMENT has expressed its appreciation at the increasing number of youths acquiring skills that have the potential to change their lives and those of their communities.

This was stated by the Bulawayo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, in her opening remarks, which were read by Deputy Director Ms Beaullar Gwaze, at the 2024 combined graduation ceremony for Vocational Training Centre graduands from Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces, held at Lobengula Vocational Training Centre.

Graduands from Bulawayo total 2,456, comprising 559 males and 1,897 females, while from Matabeleland North there were 300 graduands, made up of 152 females and 148 males.

The graduands are graduating in basketry and weaving, agriculture, carpentry, leather studies, electronics, welding, cosmetology, catering, solar installation, and clothing.

“As outlined in the theme, ‘Skill is more powerful than strength,’ it is indeed true that skill is more powerful than strength. Having strength without skill may lead one to be defeated, just like Goliath in the Bible, who was conquered by a small boy, David, who had the skill to fight,” said Minister Ncube.

She said that, before they even begin searching for employment, the graduands are already their own employers. She added that it was her hope they have already started something at home and encouraged them to make use of social media platforms to advertise their businesses.

“As a Government, it is pleasing to witness our youths acquiring skills that will change their lives and those of their communities. I urge all the graduands to be exemplary within the communities they live in and demonstrate that skills training can be an effective tool to occupy and shape the future of young people,” said Minister Ncube.
