Government has lauded the Church for its role in complementing national efforts to expand access to education as Zimbabwe advances the Heritage-Based Education model.

For more than a century, churches have remained a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s education system, contributing to formal learning, infrastructure development and the nurturing of moral and cultural values among learners.

Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister, Cde Angeline Gata, made the remarks on Wednesday during her visit to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Harare, where she said the church has been instrumental in transforming the country’s education sector.

She said that beyond infrastructure development, the Church has played a vital role in instilling discipline, values and social responsibility among young people.

“I was honoured to tour the Harare Zimbabwe Temple Open House hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This occasion is significant not only as a moment of faith and cultural openness, but also as a reflection of the church’s long-standing commitment to community development in Zimbabwe,” said Deputy Minister Gata.

She said the Open House symbolised the church’s inclusive approach and its willingness to engage the broader community.

“This demonstrates that the church has the community at heart. It is not only about faith, but also about cultural openness and inviting everyone to learn and appreciate what the church stands for,” she said.

Deputy Minister Gata said the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made notable contributions to Zimbabwe’s education system through the construction of schools, provision of learning materials and support for educational development.

“They have helped in building schools, shaping education and providing learning materials that have positively impacted our education sector,” she said.

She further noted that the church’s initiatives align with President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.

“They have complemented Government efforts and supported the vision of His Excellency the President. Their commitment to community development has been well received and is deeply appreciated,” she said.
