Government has commended the Indian government for providing Zimbabwean students with scholarships through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Foundation.
Speaking during the ICCR Foundation ceremony in Harare yesterday, Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira — who was represented by his director Mrs Martha Muguti — said the opportunity afforded to students has allowed the Zim-Indian cultural exchanges.
Prof Murwira said the Indian council played a pivotal role in the promotion of cultural diplomacy.
“The organisation has funded participation at festivals in India and overseas sponsorship of performers in dance, music, photography, theatre and visual arts. Zimbabwe is a beneficiary of 22 scholarships every year and we are grateful for this generous gesture,” said Prof Murwira.
The Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Rungsung Masakui said that the graduates of Indian institutions played an important role in various fields across the world.
“The graduates of Indian institutions are playing a leading role in different fields across the world such as in the field of politics, many prime ministers of many countries have studied in India,” said Mr Masakui.
Founded in 1950 by Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, independent India’s first Education Minister, the ICCR Foundation seeks to promote cultural exchanges worldwide.
