The Government, through the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, continues to make significant strides in tapping into technological advancements by installing 4G and 5G base stations.

4G and 5G data speeds provide enhanced data services that allow users to enjoy faster speeds for both downloads and uploads, improving their overall internet experience.

Over the past year, the ICT Ministry, working closely with the telecommunications regulator Potraz and service providers like NetOne and Econet, has seen the establishment of over 180 4G base stations and more than 25 5G base stations.

In her remarks during the ICT Ministry Interface meeting with stakeholders in Zimbabwe, held at the Potraz headquarters in the capital, ICT Minister Dr Tatenda Mavetera said that following last year’s engagements, they have gone back to the drawing board and achieved several milestone successes.

“We recognise that infrastructure development is paramount to achieving a robust telecommunications environment. The increase in 4G/LTE base stations from 2,341 to 2,530 between the First and Second Quarters of 2024 demonstrates our commitment to expanding access to high-speed internet necessary for a digital economy.

“We are also pleased to report that an additional 27 5G mobile base stations are currently operational. However, we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done to ensure that all Zimbabweans can benefit from modern telecommunications technology. Current statistics on 4G coverage show that only 44.7 percent of the Zimbabwean population has access to 4G services, indicating a significant gap in coverage. This gap is further compounded by the fact that smartphone usage in Zimbabwe is predominantly on 3G technology, unlike in most developed countries where 4G is standard,” said Minister Mavetera.

She mentioned that they have also made strides in bridging the digital divide by educating the masses on ICT-related issues.

“We have undertaken a total of 88 consumer education and awareness roadshows across the nation, coupled with 316 consumer education radio sessions to inform consumers about their rights and the services available to them.

“Our Community Engagement Workshops, held at Masasa Business Centre in Chikomba District (Mashonaland East), Brunapeg (Matebeleland South Province), Nkayi (Matebeleland North Province), and Nyamaropa (Manicaland Province), have also played a crucial role in bridging the gap between service providers and consumers.”

Minister Mavetera emphasised that, moving forward, she is committed to holding regular Interface Meetings with all stakeholders in the ICT sector.

“These meetings will serve as a platform for open dialogue, where we can collectively address challenges, share insights, and develop solutions that benefit all parties involved.

“I encourage each of you to take this opportunity to present your views, concerns, and recommendations during today’s discussions. Your input is crucial in shaping the future of our sector. Let us remember that our collective efforts are essential in fostering a vibrant ICT environment that serves the needs of all Zimbabweans. Together, we can overcome the challenges we face and build a future where every citizen has access to reliable communication services,” said Minister Mavetera.
