GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of families of liberation war heroes through continued social support programmes, saying caring for the dependants of those who sacrificed for Zimbabwe’s independence remains a national priority.
Speaking during the distribution of hygiene products to heroes’ dependants in Nyamandlovu, Umguza District, on Friday, Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Minister Monica Mavhunga said the initiative was a practical expression of the nation’s gratitude to the families of liberation heroes.
The donation, facilitated through the Heroes’ Dependants Board, included laundry powder, dishwashing liquid and hand wash.
Minister Mavhunga said while the items would assist beneficiaries with their day-to-day household needs, they also carried a deeper symbolic meaning of remembrance, appreciation and solidarity.
“Today is about much more than the distribution of household items. It is a powerful demonstration of our nation’s gratitude and unwavering commitment to the families of those brave sons and daughters who paid the ultimate sacrifice for Zimbabwe’s freedom and independence,” she said.
She said Government would continue implementing programmes aimed at improving the welfare of heroes’ dependants through educational assistance, medical support and other benefits provided under the National Heroes Act.
Minister Mavhunga commended the Heroes’ Dependants Board for complementing Government efforts through the donation, saying the gesture reflected a shared commitment to improving the livelihoods of beneficiaries.
“Our liberation heroes left behind their homes and families, endured untold hardships and, for many, laid down their lives so that we could live in a free Zimbabwe. Their families also sacrificed greatly and continue to carry that legacy with dignity, courage and resilience,” she said.
Minister Mavhunga also applauded officials from her ministry for their dedication in ensuring that assistance reaches intended beneficiaries across the country.
She called on development partners, the private sector and other stakeholders to support programmes that uplift the welfare of heroes’ dependants.
“As we launch today’s distribution, let us renew our collective commitment to honouring our heroes by caring for the families they left behind. There can be no greater tribute to their sacrifice than ensuring their dependants live with dignity, hope and the assurance that a grateful nation will always stand beside them,” said Minister Mavhunga.
The gesture comes as the country prepares for the Heroes Day and Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day commemorations, with Government continuing to roll out programmes aimed at preserving the legacy of the liberation struggle while improving the welfare of liberation war veterans and the families of fallen heroes.
