Government has begun preparations to launch a nationwide cloud-seeding programme aimed at boosting chances of precipitation for the 2026/2027 rainfall season, following warnings of a Super El Niño from global climate agencies.
According to the post-Cabinet briefing released today, cloud-seeding is scheduled to commence on 1 November.
This was presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, Dr Anxious Masuka.
“In light of the unprecedented Super El Nino warnings being issued by global climate agencies, Government is intensifying mitigatory measures, including cloud-seeding efforts to increase chances of precipitation.
“The nation is informed that cloud seeding is set to commence on 01 November 2026,” reads part of the statement.
Government also disclosed that the operation will be supported by three aircraft, strategically based at key airfields across the country to ensure coverage of the major agricultural and water-dependent provinces.
Under the deployment plan, the aircraft are expected to operate from Harare (to cover all Mashonaland Provinces), Bulawayo (to cover all Matabeleland Provinces) and Masvingo (to cover Midlands, Manicaland and Masvingo Provinces).
Cabinet’s decision reflects a determination to strengthen resilience through pre-emptive measures designed to protect agriculture, water supplies, and livelihoods during the 2026/2027 season.
