Government is determined to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities, as digital technologies have become indispensable in the modern age, particularly at a time when the world is grappling the effects of the coronavirus, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere, has said.
Speaking at the launch of the Hwange Community Information Centre (CIC) Thursday, Minister Muswere said the roll out of information centres, especially in rural communities, will continue.
“My ministry will, through Potraz and other industry players, continues to roll out programmes aimed at ensuring that rural communities are kept abreast of technological developments, especially now when we all need to be kept informed of the different aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The launch of the Hwange CIC is the second in as many months in Matabeleland North after another centre was opened in Victoria Falls last month.
Access to digital technologies, he added, would nurture a “knowledge-based economy, where knowledge, creativity and will play an important role in generating and sustaining economic growth”.
Some of the CICs will be offering free basic commuter training to enable members of the public, particularly the youths, to make use of technologies delivered in their areas.
Minister Muswere said: “Knowledge in ICTs is replacing low-quality and low-income jobs with more rewarding jobs with better quality and more rewarding jobs. I, therefore, repeat my call for our youths to take up studies in ICTs so that they can occupy their rightful place in the emerging fourth industrial revolution.”
Thursday’s launch was graced by the Minister of State for Matabeleland North (Provincial Affairs), Honourable Richard Moyo, Potraz director-general Dr Gift Machengete and senior Government officials.
