Govt evacuates 600 families to safety

Government has to date evacuated more than 600 families from areas affected by flooding in the Tokwe-Mukosi Dam’s flood basin.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti said this while briefing Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Constantine Chiwenga on the situation in villages under Chivi and Masvingo districts in relation to recent flooding.

“With the assistance of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, we have moved 643 families out of 2 514 who are in imminent danger to Chingwizi holding camp. We are now battling to move the remaining 1 874,” Minister Bhasikiti said. He said despite challenges such as water logging slowing down evacuations, at least 140 families were being moved daily.

“We should, by end of this month, have completed moving all villagers to a safe place,” he said.

Minister Bhasikiti said a make-shift clinic had been set up in Chingwizi, but there were shortages of drugs and other essentials.
Gen Chiwenga said the ZDF would assist flood victims in constructing temporary homes and a school.

“The defence forces and other security forces are ready to assist. What is more critical at the moment is to ensure a school is built so that children continue with their education,’ he said. The ZDF has deployed troops in the Chivi and Masvingo districts, which are the worst affected by the flooding.
