of the Global Political Agreement.
Establishment of the NEC is long overdue as it was supposed to be operationalised in 2009. It is envisaged that the council would proffer Government advice on restoring macro-economic stability in the country following a decade-long contraction induced by imposition of illegal sanctions by Western countries.
The NEC will have 20 members drawn from Government, business, labour, civil society and academia.
Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister Tapiwa Mashakada said lack of co-operation among the three political parties in Government was stalling progress.
“We have failed to set up NEC this year. It is sad and most unfortunate since it is due to political bickering and lack of cohesion of people in Government. As we move into the New Year, we urge all stakeholders to come together and put the NEC in place for the best interest of the country,” he said.
Drafting of the framework for the economic think tank was completed in June.
Mr Mashakada said some parties in Government took too long to study the document. “Some of the negotiators asked for more time to study the proposal of NEC which in turn delayed its birth,” he said. – New Ziana.
