Govt has land for 500 blocks of flats in Harare

to house 16 families while in Dzivaresekwa there was enough land to build 77 blocks.
Mr Munyoro said more land was available in Tafara and Mufakose.
“We can build over 500 blocks of flats on existing land. Our major constraint is funding.
“We, however, have financiers willing to enter into joint venture deals with us,” he said.
He said the Government’s thrust was on densification and “building going upwards”.
Mr Munyoro said densification has been identified as a cheaper option in terms of providing services like water, sewer, roads and electricity.

He said under the Public Sector Investment Programme, the ministry was completing the construction of three blocks of flats in Tafara, two blocks in Mufakose and another two in Merryville that will house 112 families.
He said the thrust on national housing delivery had changed with Government concentrating on provision of services such as water, sewer, roads and electricity.

Provision of such services has been identified as the most expensive component in housing delivery.
Mr Munyoro said beneficiaries of various Government housing schemes would then be expected to move onto their stands and build “incrementally”.
“Our thrust has moved from actual construction to servicing of stands. We have become more productive and in the process assisted more people,” he said.
He said the ministry was constructing a major outflow sewer in Dzivaresekwa that would unlock the construction of 24 000 residential stands in the northwestern part of the city.

The ministry has also serviced 400 stands in Dzivaresekwa which are on sale.
Another 125 stands were serviced in Sunway City. Seventy have so far been sold.
He said beneficiaries of the Whitecliffe scheme were paying monthly subscriptions of US$50 towards the servicing of the stands.

The ministry is administering the fund.
Meanwhile, Mr Munyoro said in Kwekwe, Government has serviced 770 low-density stands which are on sale while the 220 stands serviced in Mutare have been sold out.

The 325 stands serviced in Marondera have also been sold out while another 200 in Bulawayo are going on the market soon.
Mr Munyoro said the ministry was extending its services to building houses at rural service centres to accommodate civil servants.
