The Permanent Secretary for Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Nicholas Moyo, yesterday toured Simba Bhora’s Wadzanai Stadium in recognition of the remarkable achievements of the football club.
Moyo noted that Simba Bhora had made history by winning the Premier Soccer League title for the first time in Mashonaland Central Province.
He congratulated the club for its incredible performance.
“This achievement is significant; it not only brings joy to the people of Mashonaland Central but also highlights the immense talent that resides within this province,” he said.
“This province is renowned for its agricultural prowess, but now, thanks to Simba Bhora, it will also be celebrated as a region that produces exceptional sporting talent.”
Moyo said Simba Bhora’s victory reflected the Government’s vision to foster sports development across all provinces.
He expressed his commitment to ensuring that every young Zimbabwean has the opportunity to reach their full potential, both in sports and in life.
“Looking ahead, I am confident that Simba Bhora’s achievement will inspire greater participation in football and other sports within Mashonaland Central,” he said.
“As a Ministry, we will continue to work closely with local authorities, clubs, and communities to provide the necessary support, infrastructure, and resources to nurture future sporting talent.”
He encouraged Simba Bhora to partner with the National Sports Academy at Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE).
Moyo acknowledged the current minimal support for the national sports academy and stated that efforts are being made to revamp it.
He revealed that a recreational park was constructed in Concession, along with investments in a multi-purpose sports courtyard to support grassroots talent.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Christopher Magomo expressed his appreciation from the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Art, and Culture’s commitment to supporting sports development.
He said the province is proud of Simba Bhora’s victory as last year’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Champions.
“This is the first-ever team from our province to win this prestigious title. This momentous achievement reflects the fruition of the Government’s devolution agenda,” he said.
“It demonstrates how investment in sports and infrastructure can uplift communities.” He noted that Wadzanai Stadium has undergone major reconstruction, aligning with national sports infrastructure goals.
The stadium has installed floodlights, upgraded changing rooms, and added a VIP seating area.
“The improvements enhance safety and accessibility, especially for persons with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity,” he said.
Simba Bhora’s vice chairperson and spokesperson, Charles Nyatsime, confirmed the club was in line to participate in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League for the first time.
The club has seen remarkable growth since it was founded and began competing in Division 2 in 2008.
Nyatsime highlighted that the establishment of Simba Bhora has generated viable business opportunities in Shamva.
“We have been proactive in fighting drug and substance abuse in the community. Our supporters come from as far as Bulawayo, and matches generate brisk business,” he said.
“We have created 53 jobs, ranging from ground staff to technical personnel. Additionally, we have five local players and are looking forward to representing the country well at the CAF level.”
