Zimbabwe will not rush to evacuate its embassy staff in South Sudan despite the decision by some countries, mostly from the European Union to withdraw their citizens from Juba, following days of fighting that saw scores of people killed.
In an interview, Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Edgar Mbwembwe said the Zimbabwean Government was constantly in touch with its ambassador in South Sudan and there was no need for evacuation at the moment.
Mr Kufa Edward Chinoza is the head of mission in South Sudan.
There have been clashes between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar following accusations of breach of a ceasefire agreement.
“We are not evacuating our staff in Juba. We are constantly informed about political developments and the security situation in that country by our ambassador. At the moment we are satisfied that there is no need to evacuate our staff,” said Deputy Minister Mbwembwe.
He said the decision by Zimbabwe not to recall its citizens was not peculiar to Harare.
“This applies to several African countries. We will constantly get advice from our ambassador,” he said.
