Government has opened another state-of-the-art clinic in Zvishavane district as it seeks to bring health services closer to the people. Zvegona Clinic in Gomeyebani Ward was opened on Monday two months after the opening of Dambudzo Clinic in Mashauke Ward 3 in January.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Owen Ncube, who opened the clinic, said the clinics were a clear testimony of the commitment of the new dispensation to ensure that health services are brought closer to the people.
“This facility becomes the 25th health facility in the district and the second we have opened this year after Dambudzo Clinic in Mashauke Ward 3 in January. I have been told that Zvegona has a catchment population of 3 767 people who were travelling about 16km to the nearest health facility.
“The clinic had been awaiting official opening for 12 years and comes as a relief to the community of Ward 19 and Gomeyebani.”
Cde Ncube also urged women to heed First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa’s call for cancer screening.
“The First Lady Amai Mnangagwa was in the province recently at Gweru Provincial Hospital and Kwekwe General Hospital. She was with a team that was offering cervical cancer screening.
“May I therefore, urge all the women here present and those at home to go to Zvishavane District Hospital for cervical cancer screening. We are losing a lot of our loved ones to cancer and this is an opportunity for us to get screened and to be treated early,” he said.
Cde Ncube said Government has a mandate to provide quality and affordable health services to the people.
“However, we cannot do alone as Government and we welcome the support we are receiving from communities, councils (both rural and urban), community share ownership trusts, faith based organisations to mention but a few,” he said.
Funding for the construction of the clinic was received from the Zvishavane Community Share Ownership Trust.
He said the trust had been instrumental in developmental projects in Zvishavane.
“Besides this clinic Zvishavane Community Share Ownership Trust has constructed Chomuyaka dam in Ward 2, structures at Mpumelelo School in Ward 2, electrified Chivizina Secondary School and Ingome, Mapedza and Bilashaba Primary Schools.
“The trust also rehabilitated Bannockbun irrigation scheme, drilled 41 community boreholes among other projects,” he said.
